The iPhone Killer

Way back when, there was a new device that could help organize your life. The little device would take your data off your computer to take with you wherever you go. That device was called a PDA. The funny this is that it was impossible to ever hear anyone call it a PDA. The reason was because it was made by a company named Palm and it was called the Pilot. So naturally people started calling this handy little device a Palm Pilot. Every since then Palm has rulled the PDA category. There was one problem though. More portable gadgets were coming out everyday. Everyone would have to carry their cell phone, mp3 player, and their PDA. It was really inconvenient having to carry around so many different devices. So later on Smart Phones started to pop up. These devices were all-in-one devices and allowed you to conveniently carry all your data, music, and phone in one device. For awhile Palm started to lose there hold on the market, and the Blackberry started to rule. Next there was the all-mighty iPhone which changed the way we thought about phones. The iPhone really introduced a whole new meaning to “smart phone.” Instantly every cell phone company jumped on the bandwagon and tried to make their iPhone killer. Arguably to this date no company has been able to match the experience you get from an iPhone. Well wait, I take that back. Finally an old competitor has come back strong ready to give the world the iPhone killer. You would think that it would be Blackberry’s Storm, but sorry the Storm wasn’t so strong. Believe it or not, Palm is coming back and strong. They have a new device that they say has “newness” and boy does this phone really bring in some newness. The phone is called the Palm Pre.

The Palm Pre will possibly be the iPhone killer thanks to its well thought-out operating system that really gives you an amazing experience. The new OS for this sleek new phone really out does the 2.0 firmware on the iPhone. And I mention the version because when 3.0 come strolling by Palm is going to have some trouble in their hands. The Pre’s internet browser really helps it compete with the iPhone giving you an iPhone like experience allowing you to easily navigate the internet.

Probably the best thing about this phone is the Contacts list. Palm uses their new Synergy feature which takes your contacts info from Outlook, Gmail, and Facebook all together on one cantact. Synergy also takes your calenders from Outlook, Gmail, and Facebook and merges them all into one organized calender. Another thing to note is that when looking at the contacts list on the Pre there will be status icons next to contacts. This status icon is actually whether the person is online on any instant messenger screenname that you have linked to their name. With this great feature on the Pre it will be much more easier to stay in contact with your freinds and family. With this in mind, instant messenging and texting is mixed in this phone. Say your chating with your friends on AIM, they ask you a question, but you do not respond in time before they log off. Well being that everything is linked together, thanks to Palm’s Synergy feature, all you have to do is select text and it will send it as a text to your friend. This feature just makes it so much easier to have conversations. There are many other things about the Pre’s operating system, like the Card view for instance. You should deffinately go to Palm’s website and check out the many other features this operating system has.

It is very easy to notice that a lot of the things on the Pre were adopted from the iPhone. Even with these things in mind the phone still brings a whole newness into the smart phone market. And there are still things that the iPhone has that will keep iPhone users stayin with their iPhone. A big thing is Apple’s App Store for the iPhone. No other phone has such an abundance of apps available to them. So we’ll all just have to see how everything goes after this phone is officially released to the public. Do you think the new Palm Pre will finally kill the iPhone? I do call the Palm Pre “The iPhone Killer,” but I still feel the iPhone has matured and has had so much to build its back bone that it won’t fall.
