Iverson moves to Detroit, Billups and McDyess move to Denver
ESPN.com reported one of biggest trades since the Pau Gasol blockbuster deal. The Detroit Pistons has acquired Allen Iverson from the Denver Nuggets for their superstar point guard Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess. I was pretty shocked about the trade. I remember in the summer, there had been rumors of Carmelo Anthony going to the Pistons for Billups, but it never emerged to anything. However, this trade certainly caught me by surprise. I believe this was a very good trade for the Nuggets.
Chauncey Billups becomes a Denver Nugget
Billups certainly puts up great numbers each night. He’s got a bigger size compared to most point guards. Now that A.I. has left Denver, we will most likely see J.R. Smith rise as a star with the guidance of Billups. Also, after losing Marcus Camby in the summer, the Nuggets have struggled on the defensive end. Camby played a major role during his career with the Nuggets. His defense helped the Nuggets clinch the 8th seed of the Western Conference playoffs. Along with Billups, the Nuggets now have McDyess to help on the defensive side. He’s nowhere near Camby’s level of defense. But the Nuggets will have an experienced center. As for Carmelo Anthony, I’m anxious to see how he and Billups will work together. Melo and A.I. had theĀ 3rd and 4th highest PPG last season. Together, they had the highest point-scoring dual. I don’t see Melo and Billups pulling off the same feat, but hopefully they’ll be able to lead their team to become contenders for the title against Boston.
A.I. has the third highest career scoring average in the NBA
On the Pistons side of the deal, Allen Iverson is by far one of the best guards to ever play the game. He’s the third most consistent career shooting-average player in the league (after the legendary Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain). Iverson will certainly play a huge part in the offensive end for Detroit. Richard Hamilton will certainly enjoy A.I.’s presence as they rack up points for their team. Now as for Rasheed Wallace, I can see him definitely moving to the 5. I think he plays the 4 very well. But after losing McDyess, I don’t see any other option Detroit has…unless they have Kwame Brown start.
Overall, this trade made a huge uproar in the league. I’m anxious to see how each player will adapt to their new team. Iverson will certainly receive welcoming applauses from Piston fans with open arms. Billups has proven himself to be one of the elite point guards in the league. And Iverson has proven himself to be one of the greatest guards of all-time.
