Today introduced an article from about Oregon making the first Solar Highway. Portland General Electric, US Bank, and the Oregon Department of Transportation are the ones working together to make this Solar Highway a reality. All the materials to make this highway will be from Oregon companies. This will take place on Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 interchange. The project will take up 8,000 sq. ft. and produce around 112,000 kilowatt hours a year. Even though this project will only provide for 28% of the electricity that is needed to light the interchange it is still a great start to become a greener country. Governor Ted Kulongoski says, “More importantly, this project will represent a new era for energy in Oregon. It will represent a step forward toward our vision of an energy independent Oregon…” this is great to know that Oregon has an energy independent plan. Hopefully other states will start doing the same. Amazingly this solar highway will actually be up and running by the end of this year. Just goes to show how easy it is to switch to solar energy.
